PROGRAMME
______________________________________________

From the 26th to the 29th November the Literaturhaus in Vienna dedicates itself to the high art of lyric poetry: 'laut lauter lyrik' (a play of words with "loud", "phone", also meaning "all poetry") is the motto for the 11th Erich Fried festival.

For four days this literature festival explores the inexhaustible mutabilty of lyrical expression. The programme brings together voices and temperaments which will push the boundaries of language in order to capture the world in a new light.

laut lauter lyrik wants poetry to climb down from its proverbial ivory tower and mix with the performative lyrical arts of the modern club scene:
Featuring amongst others the Rotten Kinck Schow (Ann Cotten, Monika Rinck, Sabine Scho), the US-American beatboxer Yuri Lane or the poet Bas Böttcher from Berlin.
Together with the incomparable duo Attwenger the US-American spoken word poet and rapper Saul Williams will be marking the transition from textual to musical performance.
The poetess evening gathers the Austria's most distinctive lyrical voices, from the young Upper Austrian poet Judith Pfeifer to the grande dame herself, Friederike Mayröcker.

The focus on discourse and debate, which always plays a large role at the Erich Fried festivals, is literally brought to table at the three Roundtables, where renound specialists approach the general topic of this year's event series from different angles (their titles being borrowed from Fried). For the first time the discussions will be preceeded by a poetical prologue, given by Yuri Lane, Bas Böttcher and Oswald Egger.

7pm
Spoken Word

Saul Williams (USA)

The internationally celebrated spoken word poet, rockstar, rapper and actor Saul Williams was the Grand Slam champion at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe and played a leading part in the film 'Slam', which was not only awarded a prize at the Sundance Festival, but also won the Golden Camera at Cannes.

I write poetry because it is the clearest and most direct expression of how I think.

I take pride in being called a poet mostly because it feels like an ordination. I did not grow up thinking of myself as a poet, so it is an honor to be considered one.

So far, I've written four books that fall under the category of poetry. For me, they chronicle my growth as an artist, friend, lover, father, son, and individual.

My goal has never truly been to become an amazing poet, rather I have worked at becoming more expressive, thoughtful, and harmoniously balanced, and courageous enough to live my life as a poem.
