As explained by the organisers of the Berlin Poetry Festival, hosted every year by LiteraturWERKstatt Berlin, "through the ZEBRA Poetic Film Festival, poetry has established its own international festival, which in itself is the most important forum for this independent art form, situated between poetry, film and new medias". The poetic films were originally part of the festival programme. As the short film programme sparked large, yet unexpected interest among audience members, as well as among film makers, the organisers decided to present the poetic film with its own forum, in the form of the ZEBRA Poetic Film Festival. Thus, every two years Berlin becomes the centre of the poetic film scene. The number of entries for the competition has risen from around 300 at the first ZEBRA Poetic Film Festival to over 900 entries in 2008, sent in from 53 different countries. Three prizes, worth 10,000 Euros, are awarded. For the first time, Christiane Lange (LiteraturWERKstatt Berlin) brings the best of ZEBRA to Vienna.
